Dear Saranac Lake Community,
I am grateful to serve as the 7-9 Principal of Saranac Lake Junior/Senior High School. I feel that I effectively blend leadership with a deep-rooted commitment to student well-being. Before stepping into school administration, I built a solid foundation through my work in both mental health and school counseling. This background shapes my holistic approach to education, ensuring that academic excellence goes hand in hand with the social, emotional, and personal growth of every student.
The beginning of the 2026/2027 school year brought the next chapter for our building, students, and staff: we welcomed 7th and 8th grade students to our Canaras Avenue campus and they comprise the Junior High. While the Junior/Senior High School merger has resulted in more collaboration between staff and students, this has also illuminated expanded opportunities, such as Mountain Bike Club and Junior High Jazz Band. We are proud to offer 7th and 8th grade students the chance to participate in Homecoming events and for the first time in 100 years, we will have a collective yearbook showcasing the 7-12 culture at Saranac Lake Junior/Senior High School.
What hasn’t changed is our belief in cultivating successful students both academically and as genuine contributors to our community and the places lucky enough to welcome our students. Our staff still forges lasting relationships with students and our students still root for each other during athletic events. Saranac Lake values are represented within our walls; I know this because I am a lifelong resident.
My focus is to cultivate an inclusive, supportive, and high-achieving school environment. I am a strong advocate for collaborative leadership, actively partnering with staff and families to foster a learning culture where all students can thrive. Deeply invested in the Saranac Lake community, I look forward to collaborating with families to empower every student to achieve excellence and confidently step into their future.

Welcome to Saranac Lake Junior/ Senior High School!
My name is Amy Spicer, and I am honored to serve as the Saranac Lake Jr./Sr. High School Principal for grades 10-12. I am pleased to be starting my fifth year at Saranac Lake Central School District, and I am incredibly grateful to be part of such a welcoming, student-centered school community.
I’m originally from Western New York and earned my Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education from SUNY Fredonia, where I also completed my Master’s Degree in Education with a concentration in Secondary English. After graduating, I moved to Lake Placid and spent 22 wonderful years teaching English at Lake Placid Middle-High School. I loved working with students, their families, and being a classroom teacher. After many years in the classroom, I returned to graduate school and earned my advanced degree in School Building Leadership from SUNY Plattsburgh in May 2022. I truly enjoyed the four years I spent as the Principal at Saranac Lake Middle School from 2022-2026, learning and leading alongside the outstanding students, families, and staff in Saranac Lake.
Saranac Lake High School is a vibrant and supportive place where students can learn and grow. Our dedicated staff works tirelessly to create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment for all. Our teaching is student-centered, grounded in research-based best practices, and aligned with the New York State Standards and the Next Generation Learning Standards. We are proud to offer six Advanced Placement (AP) courses taught on our campus. We also offer seven Career and Technical Education (CTE) Programs, New Vision Education and New Vision Health, partnering with our local Franklin, Essex, and Hamilton BOCES.
Beyond academics, Saranac Lake High School offers a wide range of extracurricular and cultural opportunities. Students can explore their interests by joining any number of our clubs and organizations: Art Club, American Sign Language, Club LMC, Fall Play, French Club, Green Storm, Jazz Band, Key Club, Model UN, the Musical, National Honor Society, Outdoor Club, Spanish Club, Senior High Student Council, Vocal Ensembles, or one of our many 21st Century Community Learning Center Activities. There is something for everyone at SLHS!
